10 May 2019, Addis Ababa - The Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD’s) Security Sector Program (IGAD SSP) and INTERPOL held discussion on Disrupting the Finances of Criminal Networks responsible for Human Smuggling and Trafficking in the Horn of Africa. The discussion examined the existing trafficking and smuggling networks in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHoA) region, their mode of operation, and how existing anti-money laundering tools and instruments could be used to disrupt these networks. It also addressed the need to strengthen international cooperation in combating these networks, including the establishment of a partnership between INTERPOL and IGAD to cooperate in the development of a regional strategy and the building of institutional capacities to counter human smuggling and trafficking as well as to disrupt related illicit financial flows.

 1 May 2019, Bishoftu:  IGAD Security Sector Program (IGAD SSP), with support from the European Union Trust Fund (EUTF) through the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) under the IPPSHAR program, today opened a three days high level training on Community Engagement in Preventing and Countering Serious and Organized Crime for all IGAD Member States.


The role of communities in preventing and controlling crime has become prominent.  Defining community and thereby community engagement is subjected to contexts.  For the purpose of this training, communities can be defined as group of people or institutions working with people in a given territory such as neighborhoods, associations, schools or worship places.

 25 April 2019, Entebbe:  IGAD Security Sector Program (IGAD SSP), with support from the European Union Trust Fund (EUTF) through the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) under the IPPSHAR program, concluded the three days training program on the roles of women in counter terrorism for all IGAD Member States, held from 22-24 April 2019 in Entebbe, Uganda.

It is evident that women and girls constitute nearly half of the population of the IGAD region. Despite the demographic significance, their inclusion in the processes of counter radicalization and counterterrorism has been limited.

31-08-2018, Bishoftu, Ethiopia: The IGAD Security Sector Program (IGAD SSP) today concluded a three day workshop where high level participants from Governments of Djibouti and Ethiopia were able to exhaustively review, evaluate and later validate by making improvements and recommendations to enrich the earlier findings in the report on the “Mapping and Analysis of the Cross-Border Security Threats in the IGAD Region: A Case Study of the Dewele – Tog Wajaale corridor”.
